Capital Gazette puts out newspaper the morning after shooting

Capital Gazette

Journalists at the Capital Gazette published a newspaper Friday morning, the day after five of their colleagues were shot and killed inside their newsroom.

The newspaper in Annapolis, Md., tweeted Thursday night that readers could expect “a damn paper” in the morning.

The front page’s headline read “5 shot dead at The Capital” and featured photos of the victims.

{mosads}The first page of the opinion section was left blank because the staff is “speechless.”

“Today, we are speechless,” the page reads. “This page is intentionally left blank today to commemorate victims of Thursday’s shooting at our office: Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith, Wendi Winters.”

“Tomorrow this page will return to its steady purpose of offering our readers informed opinion about the world around them, that they might be better citizens.”

The suspected gunman was identified Thursday night as 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos.

Ramos reportedly held a drudge against the newspaper and filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against the Capital Gazette in 2012.

The Baltimore Sun, the Capital Gazette’s sister paper, reported Thursday that Ramos has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

He will appear for a bail review hearing on Friday morning.

Acting Anne Arundel County Police Chief William Krampf said the deadly shooting in the newsroom was a “targeted attack.”

Reporters opened up about the ambush on Twitter hours after the Thursday shooting.

Phil Davis, a crime reporter, wrote that the shooter “shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees.”

“There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload,” Davis wrote.
