“Karen and I were saddened to learn that Charles @Krauthammer, a man we greatly admire, is nearing the end of his extraordinary life,” Vice President Pence tweeted. “His wit, his wisdom, and his tireless defense of Western values have made an indelible mark on the minds of millions of Americans.”

Krauthammer, a prominent Fox News commentator, revealed in a letter on Friday that he has only “a few weeks to live” due to cancer.

“My doctors tell me their best estimate is that I have only a few weeks left to live,” Krauthammer wrote. “This is the final verdict. My fight is over.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) praised Krauthammer’s work on Thursday as being “in a class of its own.”

“In every case, on practically every major national issue, Charles has elevated our public discourse,” McConnell said in a statement. “He’s illuminated a dizzying array of topics for his enormous audience with clear thinking and seemingly bottomless expertise. Quite simply, his work is in a class of its own.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) also offered his condolences to Krauthammer and his family, calling the author “one of the strongest voices and most brilliant minds in all of American politics.”

“I pray God will provide him and his family comfort in these difficult times,” Graham wrote on Twitter.

Krauthammer also won praise from across the aisle. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) complimented the conservative commentator’s “agile mind” and recalled some advice that Krauthammer once gave him.

“Sad to hear this. Charles has an agile mind and is always ready to defend his beliefs,” Swalwell tweeted. “He once advised me, before going on @TuckerCarlson for the first time to beware, ‘I once saw Tucker interview a shark-bite victim,’ he told me. ‘And Tucker took the side of the shark.’ “
