‘SNL’ ad prices have more than doubled in two years: report

Saturday Night Live” has become so popular in the Trump era that its ad prices have doubled from where they were two years ago, according to a Thursday report by Variety.

The magazine reports that since kicking off its 43rd season, “SNL” has sold 30-second spots for between $100,000 and $300,000, according to data from Standard Media Index, which provides advertising cost and spend data.

The spend largely depends on when during the 90-minute program the ad is purchased. “SNL” airs starting at 11:30 p.m. EDT.

Overall, the average cost of a standard ad on “SNL” is $183,730, according to estimates from ad buyers per Variety. The rise is substantial, as the average cost of a 30-second ad in the show’s 2016-2017 season was $147,000. 

In the prior season, with Trump not yet fully on the political scene, the average cost of a 30-second spot was $89,500, or less than half of the average cost this season. 

The program recently won several Emmys, including one for Alec Baldwin’s portrayal of President Trump. Baldwin won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Kate McKinnon won a Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award for her portrayal of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Last week’s episode hosted by “Wonder Woman” actress Gal Gadot averaged 6.802 million viewers overall which maintained 96 percent of its season premiere episode that featured actor Ryan Gosling.

The small dropoff from the season premiere was the strongest Week 1 to Week 2 retention for “Saturday Night Live” in three years.
