Cheney takes shot at Trump: ‘I like Republican presidents who win re-election’

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) on Sunday morning posted a tweet with a picture of former President George W. Bush that said “I like Republican presidents who win re-election” ahead of the airing of a sitdown interview she did with “60 Minutes.”

Cheney’s tweet appears to be a shot at former President Trump. In her interview with “60 Minutes,” she said that some Republican members of Congress have privately encouraged her to continue her outspoken efforts against Trump.

Trump and Cheney have been involved in a public feud since the former chairwoman of the House Republican Conference joined nine other GOP House members in voting to impeach Trump following the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

“Have members of Congress, Republicans, come up to you privately and whispered in your ear ‘Way to go, Liz’ and encouraged you but won’t come forward and say that publicly?” CBS’s Lesley Stahl asked Cheney on “60 Minutes.”

“Yes,” Cheney said, adding that the sentiment came from members of the House and Senate.

Cheney has also been vocal in pushing back against Trump’s claims that the 2020 presidential election was riddled with fraud.

In May, the Republican Party removed Cheney from her leadership role, a showing of extraordinary loyalty to Trump.

Earlier this month, Trump endorsed Cheney’s upcoming reelection opponent, Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman. Meanwhile. some prominent Republicans have more publicly rallied behind Cheney and her reelection efforts.

Bush will hold a fundraiser for Cheney in Dallas next month, and others, like former Speakers Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and John Boehner (R-Ohio), have contributed to her campaign financially.

These efforts come as Cheney tries to garner additional support ahead of Wyoming’s Republican primary next year.
