House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is considering tapping Rep. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), a Republican who voted to impeach former President Trump, to join the Jan. 6 select committee, CNN reported on Thursday, citing multiple sources.
Pelosi was asked at a news conference Thursday about the possibility of selecting another Republican to join the panel.
“We’ll see,” she said.
“I mean, there are some members that would like to be on it,” Pelosi added. “But we’ll see.”
The consideration of another Republican addition to the select committee comes one day after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) pulled all his GOP picks from the panel.
McCarthy pulled his five picks after Pelosi rejected two of the five, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.).
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) told CNN on Thursday that Kinzinger would be a “welcome addition” to the committee if he is approved by Pelosi.
Kinzinger was one of only 10 House Republicans to vote for Trump’s second impeachment and has been vocal about his disgust with the Jan. 6 riot.
If Kinzinger is added, he would become the second Republican to join the group behind Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who was recently pulled from her leadership position for her comments against the former president.
“There must be an investigation that is nonpartisan, that is sober, that is serious, that gets to the facts, wherever they may lead,” Cheney said Wednesday after McCarthy pulled his picks. “And at every opportunity, the minority leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened to block this investigation.”
