Dallas newspaper endorses Ellzey in special House runoff

The Dallas Morning News is endorsing House candidate Jake Ellzey (R) in a special runoff race.

In an editorial posted on Monday, the news organization said it was endorsing Ellzey to succeed Rep. Ron Wright (R), who died of COVID-19 in February, because of his positions on tax relief, the national debt, government spending and personal liberty.

Ellzey is running against Wright’s wife, Susan Wright (R).

“We happen to think that the party would be well served by focusing on governing on clear conservative principles rather than engaging in divisive political battles, and that Ellzey is the candidate in this election who is better equipped to offer such leadership,” the newspaper said.

It had also endorsed Ellzey in 2018, when he ran against Ron Wright for the same seat.

The Texas House runoff election will be held on July 27. 

The Morning News said Susan Wright seemed “less ready to offer the kind of principle-based conservative leadership that the district needs in the years ahead.”

Former President Trump recently has endorsed Susan Wright in the special election.
