Scalise carries a milk carton saying Harris is ‘missing’ at the border

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) on Wednesday brought to the Capitol a milk carton with Vice President Harris’s picture and the words “missing at the border,” a dig at what Republicans say is the Biden administration’s lack of urgency about the surge in migration.

President Biden picked Harris earlier this month to lead the administration’s effort to control the flood of migrants crossing into the country from Mexico. Administration officials later clarified her focus would be on the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, from which the majority of the migrants are coming.

The “missing at the border” depiction Scalise brought to a House GOP press conference harkens back to the missing children ads seen on milk cartons nationwide beginning in the early 1980s.

“This is out of control. It’s the middle of the night. We’ve seen dozens of children flow freely across the border in just the past few minutes,” Scalise tweeted during a recent trip with other Republicans to the southwest border. “This is the reality of Joe Biden’s disastrous amnesty agenda.”

During a roundtable discussion on Wednesday, Harris said she would soon travel to Central America as part of her efforts to combat the root cause of the mass migration.

“Our focus is to deal with the root causes, and I’m looking forward to traveling, hopefully as my first trip to the Northern Triangle stopping in Mexico and then going to Guatemala sometime soon,” she said

Fully dealing with the scope of the crisis will take time, Harris said.

“It will not be obvious overnight,” she continued. “The work we have to do is going to require a commitment that is continuous, that we institutionalize with our partners, and that is the work that I am prepared to do which is to begin that process of meaningful work knowing that we’re going to have to have a long-term strategy and it will take some time to see the benefits of that work.”
