Democratic Rep. Susan Wild wins reelection in Pennsylvania

Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.) on Friday was projected to win reelection in the race to represent Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, defeating Republican Lisa Scheller.

The Associated Press called the race at 12:09 p.m. EST.

The 63-year-old Democrat successfully defended her seat from Scheller in the first congressional race between two Jewish women. Wild’s challenger painted her as “Socialist Susan” and campaigned to end sanctuary city funding and stand against the Green New Deal, which Wild declined to support.

The race was competitive, as former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton won the district over President Trump in 2016 by 1 percentage point.

Wild has served one term in the House as the first representative of the district after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered redistricting due to gerrymandering. She was elected in 2018 to fill the seat left vacant when former Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Pa.) retired.

She became the only Jewish Pennsylvanian to hold federal office and the first woman to represent the Lehigh Valley in the district that includes Allentown, Pa., the state’s third largest city.
