Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.) won the Democratic primary in Maryland’s 7th District on Tuesday, making it likely he’ll win a full term of his own in November in the safe blue district.
Mfume, the former CEO of the NAACP, won a special election in April to fill the remainder of the term of the late Rep. Elijah Cummings.
On Tuesday, Mfume defeated 18 Democrats running against him, including Maya Cummings, the widow of Elijah Cummings. He was leading with 81 percent of the vote after 27 percent of precincts had reported, according to The Associated Press.
Rep. Cummings, who chaired the House Oversight and Reform Committee, died at age 68 from complications from long-standing health issues.
