Ocasio-Cortez visits islands of Twitter followers on Animal Crossing video game

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Thursday put out a public plea for the codes of her Twitter followers and made several “House calls” to their islands in the Animal Crossing video game.

The progressive firebrand recently purchased a Nintendo Switch and a copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, a massively popular source of entertainment during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. She wrote Thursday that she wanted to visit other islands.

Ocasio-Cortez opened up her Twitter direct messages for four minutes so any of her 6.8 million followers could send her their “Dodo” codes  — the unique code generated as an invitation for friends to visit private islands.

“Honestly never in my life did I think opening my DMs would grant me faith in humanity but the brief window actually resulted in a lot of these messages being very wholesome,” she wrote on Twitter. “People are asking for surprise visits to their spouse’s islands!! This is the love everyone deserves.”

With her character donning a customized “AOC” campaign shirt, Ocasio-Cortez dropped by to exchange fruit and sign bulletin board notes in the interactive realm.

One player, Justin Mirsky, and his wife Laura Smykla told The Washington Post about the congresswoman’s visit to their island.

He used to live in Ocasio-Cortez’s New York district and said she left a lovely note at the bulletin board outside their island’s city hall.

“To Justin, mama, and family – Thank you for welcoming me to your lovely island. It is such an honor to visit your home away from home! – Alexandria from BoogieDown” the message reads.

Nintendo’s smash hit game sold a record 5 million copies in March as millions entered coronavirus lockdowns, making it the highest-selling title for any console in a single month.
