Democratic congresswomen wear white to Trump’s address in honor of suffrage movement

Droves of Democratic congresswomen are wearing “suffragette” white to President Trump’s third State of The Union address in honor of the early 20th century movement that helped pave the way for women to earn the right to vote in America.

Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) and other Democrats took to social media to share photos of themselves together in all white hours ahead of Trump’s speech on Tuesday afternoon.

According to USA Today, the symbolic move was organized by the House’s Democratic Women’s Caucus. Dozens of congresswomen also made a similar gesture at Trump’s State of the Union address last year.

When discussing the effort at a press conference on Tuesday, Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-Mich.), who chairs the caucus, reportedly said the group of congresswomen “stand united to speak out against President Trump’s backwards agenda, which seeks to set our women and attack the foundation that was built by the women pioneers of this country.”

Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) also called the move a “sign of women empowerment and unity” while speaking to reporters on Tuesday, according to USA Today.

“It is important for everyone, including the president, to understand that we play an important role here in the Congress and elsewhere,” she continued.

A bulk of the congresswomen were also seen donning “ERA YES” buttons in photos posted to social media on Tuesday to promote the Equal Rights Amendment, according to The Washington Post.

Over 200 buttons were reportedly provided to Rep. Jackie Speier’s (D-Calif.) office by the ERA Coalition and the Feminist Majority to distribute to the other congresswomen. The move reportedly comes a week before the measure is scheduled to be heard in the House.
