Katie Hill writes to former House colleagues about Calif. shooting: ‘Speak up for our community’

Former Rep. Katie Hill (D-Calif.) sent an email to her former freshman House colleagues asking them to “have our back in Congress” after a fatal shooting occurred at a high school in her district. 

“Here I sit, less than half a mile away from the school, no longer in Congress and unable to advocate for them in all of the ways I want to,” Hill, who resigned from Congress last month, wrote in the message, which was obtained by Politico. 

“I am certainly using my voice and my power to do everything I can – but I am asking you to please have our back in Congress,” Hill added.

“Our community needs to know that they still have people in their corner in the halls of power,” she said.

A spokesperson for the lawmaker confirmed to The Hill in an email that she sent the letter to her former freshman colleagues. 

On Thursday, a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were killed in a shooting at Saugus High School, which Hill attended as a teen. 

Hill resigned last month after she was accused of having inappropriate sexual relationships with congressional and campaign staffers.

She denied having an inappropriate relationship with a member of her congressional staff, which would be against House rules, though she admitted to one with a campaign staffer. 

Hill, in her final speech, called out what she described as a “double standard” allowing men accused of misconduct to remain in power.
