Omar calls Trump hosting G-7 at Doral ‘disturbing’

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is sharply criticizing the announcement that next year’s Group of Seven (G-7) summit will be held at Doral, President Trump’s Miami golf resort, calling it another example of Trump using his office to line his pockets.

“It is quite disturbing to see a president have a complete disregard for the rule of law, for tradition, for our Constitution and just blatantly enrich himself and his family,” Omar told Dean Obeidallah on Thursday evening on his SiriusXM radio show.

{mosads}”We can’t continue to look the other way — we must do everything we can to hold him accountable,” she added.

Trump announced Thursday that the G-7 meeting would be held at Trump National Doral Golf Club in Florida, drawing heat from Democrats who say it represents a clear conflict of interest.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in a tweet, cited the Emoluments Clause, a provision in the first article of the Constitution that states the president cannot accept gifts or payments of any kind from foreign governments.

Omar also went after the GOP, criticizing its continued support of Trump, despite the growing Ukraine scandal, which has led House Democrats to launch an impeachment inquiry.

“We see a lot of them so focused on their self-preservation … [in] their protection of this president, their protection of his Cabinet members, their protection of his corrupt children,” Omar said. “We don’t see them working to protect this democracy. We don’t see them working to uphold the rule of law.”

She continued: “We don’t see them pushing for the type of transparency and accountability that they often time talked about and were used to hearing them talk about [when it came to President Obama].”
