Cummings releases statement on attempted break-in after Trump attacks

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) released a statement Friday morning following news reports Thursday his Baltimore house had been broken into.

In a brief statement, the Maryland congressman confirmed that an intruder attempted to break in through his front door before being scared off by Cummings’s yelling.

{mosads}“An individual attempted to gain entry into my residence at approximately 3:40 AM on Saturday, July 27. I was notified of the intrusion by my security system, and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the house,” the lawmaker said through his office.

“I thank the Baltimore Police Department for their response and ask that all further inquiries be directed to them,” he added.

His remarks come hours after President Trump noted the break-in attempt on Twitter, his latest volley at the Maryland lawmaker following days of attacks aimed at Cummings’s Baltimore district.

“Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!,” Trump said in a tweet earlier on Friday.

Trump has referred to Baltimore as “rat infested” and in poor conditions in recent days as Cummings joined the list of minority lawmakers targeted through Twitter attacks by the president.
