Pelosi sidesteps impeachment question in Normandy, focuses on veterans

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) sidestepped a question about impeachment in an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell in Normandy, France, saying she preferred to focus on veterans during the event marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Pelosi, who was among those on hand for the D-Day memorial services on Thursday, said she hoped to see a “message of unity” from President Trump as foreign leaders gathered in France to honor the fallen soldiers.

“Looking at that bipartisan delegation here of Democrats and Republicans joining together to celebrate the ideals and the sacrifices, we’re so divided as a country right now,” Mitchell remarked during the interview on “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”{mosads}

“Do you worry about the politics right now? Impeachment and everything else that’s on the table, and how that can further divide us?” the host continued. 

“Well, again, with all due respect to your question, I’m not here to talk about impeachment,” Pelosi replied. “But I do say that on the subject of our veterans we always strive to work in a bipartisan way.”

“So, this is not a departure from what we set as a standard. Wherever we can we try to be as bipartisan, non-partisan as possible. That’s a comfort to veterans,” she added.

Pelosi’s remarks came shortly after publicized comments by Trump in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham in which he referred to the Democratic leader as “Nervous Nancy” and “a disaster.”

Trump claimed that the Democratic leader did not understand a joint statement from the Justice Department and special counsel’s office regarding the role Justice Department guidelines played in the decision to not charge the president with obstruction of justice.

“Nancy Pelosi, I call her ‘Nervous Nancy,’ Nancy Pelosi doesn’t talk about it,” Trump said. “Nancy Pelosi is a disaster, OK? She’s a disaster. Let her do what she wants, you know what? I think they’re in big trouble.”

Pelosi also declined to respond to Trump’s comments when speaking with reporters earlier Thursday. 

“I don’t talk about the president while I’m out of the country. That’s my principle,” she said.

Pelosi has resisted calls for impeachment from a growing number of lawmakers on the left, including 2020 presidential candidates Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), among others.
