Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), a 2020 presidential candidate, stopped short of calling for the impeachment of President Trump on Sunday, but did say that impeachment might be the only way to “save the country.”
“This president is taking us down that road,” Swalwell said while appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “It’s maybe the only road to save the country.”
He did call for the impeachment of Attorney General William Barr.
{mosads} “I’ll tell you with the attorney general, I think we should move to impeach him first,” he said.
Swalwell, who is on the House Judiciary Committee, added that the White House needs to see some kind of consequences for its actions.
“We have a really bad kid at the White House and unless we start showing that there are consequences for their actions, he’s only going to get worse and the next kid, the next president is going to look at what we did now and judge their actions based on whether there were consequences or not,” he said.
“So we have to start taking this president seriously and speaking the only language they know, which is force and consequence,” he added.
After the publication of the special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, a few Democrats called to impeach the president or look into impeaching him. Democratic leadership, however, did not call for impeachment.
After revelations last week that Mueller objected to Barr’s summary of his Russia probe report, several Democratic presidential candidates called upon Barr to step down.
Swalwell is among more than 20 people competing for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
