Greene blasts GOP colleagues’ ‘pathetic’ excuses to table Mayorkas impeachment

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called out the group of Republicans who voted to shelve her resolution to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, calling their reasoning “pathetic.” 

“To the 8 Republicans who voted with Dems to kill the impeachment of Mayorkas: How many more Americans have to die while you claim impeachment has to be done the ‘right way?'” Greene wrote Tuesday on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. 

“My articles have been rotting in committee and now go back on the shelf,” the Georgia congresswoman added. “Your excuses are pathetic!”

Greene’s rebuke comes a day after eight House Republicans voted alongside all Democrats in a 209-201 vote to refer the impeachment resolution to committee, blocking it from coming to a floor vote.

Republican Reps. Patrick McHenry (N.C.), Tom McClintock (Calif.), John Duarte (Calif.), Virginia Foxx (N.C.), Darrell Issa (Calif.), Cliff Bentz (Ore.), Ken Buck (Colo.) and Mike Turner (Ohio) voted with the Democrats.

Greene’s proposed resolution, which she moved to force a vote on last week, accuses the DHS secretary of “willful admittance of border crossers” and says he has a duty to protect the U.S. from an “invasion.” 

The Georgia lawmaker also alleges that Mayorkas violated the Secure Fence Act — a 2006 law that demands perfection at the border by declaring the border operationally secure only if no people or contraband improperly enter the country.

McClintock argued in a statement Monday that while he doesn’t support Mayorkas, impeachment inquiries shouldn’t “apply to political disagreements.”

“To remove an official by impeachment, it must be for a clearly defined crime and it must be a ‘high’ crime, meaning one related to the official’s duties,” the California Republican said.

“The House made a mockery of impeachment twice during the last session of Congress. We must not allow the left to become our teachers,” he continued. “If these clear constitutional principles are not restored, now, that power will be just one election from being turned against the constitutionalists on the Supreme Court, or upon any future Republican administration.”
