Boehner gets a vote for Speaker amid House GOP chaos

Former Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) notched a vote for House Speaker on Wednesday as Republicans struggled to elect a new leader.

When Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) had his name called during a roll call vote for House Speaker, he shouted Boehner’s name, eliciting cheers and laughter from other members on the House floor.

Later, as the tally of votes for Speaker was announced, the House broke out into similar cheers when Boehner was mentioned as having earned one vote.

The House GOP’s leading candidate to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), lost two rounds of voting this week, with no clear path for Republicans to electing a new leader as of Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier Wednesday, Boehner joined fellow Republican Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who was also once House Speaker, in voicing support for the idea of giving more power to Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) as Republicans work to select a new permanent Speaker.
