Scalise, Giffords hug on House floor

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), who have each survived mass shootings, shared a hug on the House floor on Tuesday night.

The hug came before a moment of silence on the 8th anniversary of Gifford being shot, according to CNN

Giffords was shot in the head on Jan. 8, 2011, while meeting with constituents in Arizona. Several other people were also shot in the incident.

{mosads}Giffords, who is an advocate for stricter gun control, was visiting Congress on Tuesday for the introduction of legislation that would require universal background checks for gun purchases.

Giffords joined Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) to introduce the bill.

Scalise was shot in Alexandria, Va., in June 2017 when a gunman opened fire while members of the GOP were practicing for the annual congressional baseball game.

The gunshot wound left Scalise severely injured and forced him to undergo multiple surgeries.
