Sotomayor inspired Ocasio-Cortez to wear red lipstick, hoops to swearing in

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said on Friday that she was inspired to wear red lipstick and hoop earrings during her congressional swearing-in ceremony by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. 

“Lip+hoops were inspired by Sonia Sotomayor, who was advised to wear neutral-colored nail polish to her confirmation hearings to avoid scrutiny,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter. “She kept her red.”

“Next time someone tells Bronx girls to take off their hoops, they can just say they’re dressing like a Congresswoman,” she continued.

Ocasio-Cortez was tweeting in response to Refinery29’s news and politics editor Ashley Alese Edwards, who tweeted earlier on Friday that she plans to wear gold hoops and red lipstick everywhere she goes after the New York Democrat did the same.

Ocasio-Cortez was sworn into Congress on Thursday.

{mosads}Ocasio-Cortez, who made history last November after becoming the youngest woman in history to be elected to Congress at 29 years old, rose to fame after she pulled off one of the year’s biggest upsets during primary season by unseating Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.).

Her victory was seen as heralding a new progressive wave.
