Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) brought Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) sushi to his Washington office Wednesday, after the Texas Democrat said his sushi was stolen during a carjacking Monday.
“Don’t let ‘em get you down, @RepCuellar. We got your sushi back,” Gonzales wrote Wednesday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Gonzales included a photo of two trays of sushi in front of Cuellar’s nameplate by the entrance of his House office. Cuellar retweeted the post.
The gesture comes after Cuellar was carjacked Monday night outside his Washington, D.C., apartment in Navy Yard. He said he had just parked his car when three young men holding guns appeared behind him. They asked for Cuellar’s key, and when Cuellar complied, and they drove off, he said. The lawmaker said he was unharmed.
In subsequent interviews, Cuellar appeared in good spirits and suggested the worst part about being the victim of an armed carjacking was that his assailants stole his sushi.
“[Police] were able to recover the car, my phone within a couple hours. I want to thank them. But what really got me upset is that they stole my sushi. That’s what got me upset,” he said in an interview with MSNBC’s Jose Diaz-Balart.
