House GOP to force members to give up leadership positions if running for higher office
House Republicans on Thursday adopted an amendment to conference rules that would bar lawmakers from remaining in leadership positions if they are seeking higher office.
The amendment, introduced by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), would force members of House GOP leadership to step down from their post if they announce Senate or gubernatorial bids.
“It’s a commonsense proposal to ensure House Republican leaders are focused on advancing our legislative agenda, and Rep. Stefanik is pleased it was passed unanimously,” Stefanik
GOP sources said there were some grievances within the party last year over Rep. Luke Messer (R-Ind.) launching his Indiana Senate bid shortly after obtaining the position of GOP policy chair. He ended up losing in the Senate GOP primary earlier this year.
Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) also launched his Senate bid after being elected policy chair during his time in the House.
