Dem lawmaker: Clinton should have fired former adviser accused of sexual harassment ‘on the spot’
Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) said early Monday that she thinks Hillary Clinton should have fired her former campaign adviser after he was accused of sexual harassment.
Wilson was asked on CNN whether she thinks Clinton should have fired her then-senior faith adviser, Burns Strider, after he was accused of sexual harassment by another campaign staffer.
“On the spot,” Wilson said.
{mosads}A report last week said that Clinton decided to keep Strider on her presidential campaign team in 2008 after a female staffer came forward with sexual harassment allegations against him.
Clinton’s campaign manager at the time, Patti Solis Doyle, reportedly recommended that she fire Strider, but Clinton requested that he remain on staff, according to The New York Times. He was docked several weeks pay and ordered to undergo counseling.
Strider was fired years later from a pro-Clinton PAC after allegations of harassment.
Clinton last week responded to the report, saying in a pair of tweets that she was “dismayed” when she was made aware of the allegations against Strider, but was “heartened” that his accuser came forward.
She did not directly address why she decided to keep him on her campaign.
A spokesman for Clinton provided a statement to the Times from the law firm that represented Clinton’s 2008 campaign.
“To ensure a safe working environment, the campaign had a process to address complaints of misconduct or harassment. When matters arose, they were reviewed in accordance with these policies, and appropriate action was taken,” the statement said. “This complaint was no exception.”
