Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said God’s hand was on former President Trump during the shooting at his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Greene said in a speech addressing the Republican National Convention on Monday that the present moment is a “celebratory” one in that Trump was being nominated for president but also a “somber” one for the country given the attack.
“Two days ago, evil came for the man we admire and love so much. I thank God that his hand was on President Trump,” she said, followed by applause from those in attendance.
The FBI identified the shooter at the Butler, Pa., rally as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. The shots that rang out struck Trump in the ear — leaving him bloodied — killed one spectator and seriously injured two others.
Greene said she is praying for the family of the deceased victim, Corey Comperatore, and those who were injured. She said Comperatore “embodied the spirit” of the America First movement in shielding his family from bullets and sacrificing himself in the process.
Greene added that Comperatore reminded the country that Americans should do “whatever it takes” to defend the people and the country.
“We will honor Corey’s memory by building the country he wanted, the country he wanted for his children and a government worthy of the American people,” she said.
Despite being shot, Trump continued with his plans to attend the convention, flying to Milwaukee on Sunday. He formally became the Republican nominee following a roll call of states on the opening day of the convention on Monday.
