Trump, Orbán discuss ‘peace mission 5.0’ at Mar-a-Lago

Former President Trump hosted Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán on Thursday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, huddling with the European autocrat immediately after world leaders gathered with President Biden in Washington.

Orbán traveled to Florida to meet with Trump at the conclusion of this week’s NATO summit, which took place in the nation’s capital. Details of the meeting were scarce, but Orbán said the two men discussed “peace mission 5.0” regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“It was an honour to visit President @realDonaldTrump at Mar-a-Lago today. We discussed ways to make #peace. The good news of the day: he’s going to solve it!” Orbán posted on the social platform X.

Trump thanked Orbán in a Truth Social post.

“There must be PEACE, and quickly. Too many people have died in a war that should have never started!” he wrote.

It marked the second time this year Trump has hosted Orbán at Mar-a-Lago. Orbán has drawn widespread criticism for democratic backsliding in Hungary, but he has been a close ally of Trump’s and is admired by many U.S. conservatives.

Trump met in early March with Orbán, the Hungarian autocrat who has offered praise for the former president. Following the meeting, Orbán said he and Trump were aligned on the war in Ukraine and that Trump would not give “a single penny” to Kyiv if elected.

The former president has repeatedly claimed he would be able to end the war if he were reelected, though he has offered no plan or specifics, and critics have argued it would mean forcing Ukraine to give up territory to Moscow.

At the NATO summit, Biden and other world leaders underscored their support for Ukraine in its war against Russia. The U.S. and its allies announced the Ukraine Compact, which “creates a unified and comprehensive security architecture to support Ukraine today and in the future, in war and in peace.”
