Carville: ‘Inevitable’ that Biden drops out

Democratic strategist James Carville said Monday that President Biden dropping out of the race is “inevitable.”

“I don’t predict things, I’m just tellin’ ya, it’s inevitable,” Carville told NewsNation anchor Chris Cuomo in a clip highlighted by Mediaite. “He will come to the conclusion. People will get the message to him. He will understand, his family will understand. They’ll pray on it and they’ll make the right decision.”

Biden has been facing political headwinds following his debate performance against former President Trump late last month. Biden’s voice sounded raspy and he stumbled over his words during the debate, giving rise to growing concerns about whether he should remain at the top of the Democratic ticket.

Carville said Monday in an op-ed for The New York Times that he thinks Biden will step out of the presidential race, and that the faster it occurs, the better. He also said Democrats shouldn’t automatically nominate Vice President Harris or any other person to replace the president.

“We’ve got to do it out in the open — the exact opposite of what Donald Trump wants us to do,” Carville wrote. “For the first time in his life, Mr. Trump is praying. To win the White House and increase his chances of avoiding an orange jumpsuit, he needs Democrats to make the wrong moves in the coming days — namely, to appear to rig the nomination for a fading president or the sitting vice president or some other heir apparent.”

When it comes to staying in the presidential race, Biden is “going to come to the conclusion that this is just not a good idea,” Carville told Cuomo on Monday.

Biden and his allies have intensely pushed back on the idea of him stepping out of the presidential race, with the president saying in a letter to congressional Democrats on Monday that “voters — and the voters alone — decide the nominee of the Democratic Party.”
