House Republicans outraise Democrats for first month this year

The House Republicans’ campaign arm outraised its Democratic counterpart last month for the first time in a single month this year as the 2024 race heats up.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) announced Thursday that it raised $12.6 million for its House candidates in May, compared to the $11.9 million the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) took in. Both totals were records for the committees in the month of May.

An NRCC press release states that the group raised more than $1 million from small-dollar donations in the days following former President Trump’s conviction in his New York hush money trial, and about a third of them had not previously given to the committee.

“Growing the majority is a team effort, and we smashed this fundraising record with the help of everyday Americans and our incredible leadership team,” NRCC Chair Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) said in the release.

The DCCC still has the advantage in both cash on hand, with $78.8 million to the NRCC’s $64.9 million, and total fundraising throughout this cycle, with $191 million compared to $147.4 million.

“With the record-breaking support we’re receiving from across the country, we will ensure our Frontliners and candidates have the resources to make Hakeem Jeffries Speaker and get Congress back to work next year,” DCCC Chair Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) wrote in a release.

Still, the NRCC’s numbers from last month are an improvement to narrow the gap.

The two parties are in a fierce battle for the House this November, with Republicans holding a narrow majority in the lower chamber of Congress.

Republicans will target seats to try to give them more breathing room than the party has had throughout this legislative session, while Democrats will try to win back control of the body after losing it in 2022.
