Rep. Lucy McBath wins Democratic primary in Georgia

Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Ga.) has won the Democratic nomination for another term representing Georgia in the House, according to Decision Desk HQ. 

McBath faced two opponents in her effort to win the Democratic primary: state Rep. Mandisha Thomas and Cobb County Commissioner Jerica Richardson. The potential existed for the race to go to a runoff if no candidate received at least 50 percent of the vote, but McBath was able to clear the threshold. 

She was originally elected to serve Georgia’s 7th Congressional District in 2018 and was reelected in 2020. She switched to the 6th Congressional District after the state’s redistricting process made the 6th more favorable to Republicans. 

McBath then decided to switch back to run in the 6th District this year after a federal judge approved a new map for Georgia that took apart the Democratic-leaning 7th District. 

She is set to face Republican Jeff Criswell in the general election and will be favored to win in the solidly Democratic district.
