Former President Trump has said there’s a “good chance” he’ll announce his running mate at the Republican national convention in July.
“What are the chances you will announce your vice president pick while in Milwaukee, at the convention?” Scripps News’s Charles Benson asked Trump in an interview released Thursday.
“That’s probably a pretty good chance, I would say. I don’t say anything’s 100 percent, but you’re getting pretty close. I’ll be doing it in Milwaukee, we’ll be — we’re gonna have a great time,” Trump said.
Now that Trump is the party’s presumptive nominee, speculation is intensifying over which GOP name he’ll pick to be the vice presidential candidate on his ticket. Several figures who ran against Trump in the party’s presidential primary this year — like North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.) — have been floated for the role.
Others rumored to be on the shortlist are Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R), and Sens. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) was once seen as a top contender, but her chances of scoring the slot on Trump’s ticket are now considered quashed after an anecdote from her forthcoming book sparked controversy.
Mike Pence, who served as Trump’s vice president during his first term in the Oval Office, ran against Trump this cycle and has said he won’t endorse his former boss for another four years.
The Republican National Committee is holding this year’s GOP convention in Milwaukee in mid-July.
“We’re bringing the convention to Milwaukee. It really is an important state for us. Wisconsin has to be won by us,” Trump told Scripps News.
