Lara Trump blasts hush money case as ‘insane,’ says it won’t hurt Trump campaign

Lara Trump, the co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), said the hush money case brought against her father-in-law is “insane” as jury selection for the trial begins Monday.

Former President Trump is back in a New York courtroom for the first day of the hush money trial where he faces 34 counts of falsifying business records. Lara Trump took aim Monday at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) for bringing the case during the 2024 election season.

“It is ridiculous that they are dragging this man in a New York City courtroom. It is so clear how partisan this is, that Alvin Bragg himself wouldn’t even take this case up until when, until Donald Trump announced he was running for president,” she said on NewsNation’s “Morning in America.”

“It is insane that we are in this place in the United States of America,” she added.

She said while the case was “ludicrous,” she did not expect it to hurt the former president’s campaign for the White House. She noted that people “don’t care about these court cases” brought against him.

“This doesn’t have anything to do with crime or with the right thing happening. It’s about politics,” she said. “People see that, they understand that, and it is why whenever you have situations like this, our fundraising tends to go up. I don’t think this will be any different. I think people are going to continue to support this president.”

The trial will take place over at least six weeks, meaning that Trump will need to spend much of his time in the New York courtroom instead of on the campaign trail. He is expected attend campaign events during his days off.

Trump is facing 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with his reimbursements to his then-fixer, Michael Cohen, for paying adult film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 before the 2016 election to stay quiet about an alleged affair with the former president.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing in the hush money case, labeling the effort as politically motivated during an election season. Just hours before his appearance in the New York courtroom Monday, he also blasted the judge overseeing the trial and again labeled the entire case as a “witch hunt.”
