Socialist organization endorses push for ‘uncommitted’ votes in Democratic primaries ahead of Super Tuesday

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the largest leftist political organization in the country, endorsed the push for “uncommitted” votes in Super Tuesday primaries Sunday.

The “uncommitted” votes are meant to serve as protest against the president’s response to the Israel-Hamas war. The votes express support for a party, but not for any candidate on the ballot.

The endorsement comes after more than 100,000 Michigan voters backed the “uncommitted” line in the state’s primary as Biden faces rising pressure from Democrats to back a permanent cease-fire in the conflict. 

“Until this administration ends its support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and delivers a permanent, lasting ceasefire, Joe Biden will bear the responsibility for another Trump presidency,” the DSA wrote Sunday in a statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Biden is on track to lose the election to Trump unless he chooses to listen to the working class of this country and change course. Defeat is certain if he fails to do so,” the group said, citing turnout for the “uncommitted” vote push in Michigan.

Led by Arab American community leaders and progressive activists, and backed by notable politicians including Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), the “uncommitted” movement mobilized tens of thousands of Democrats in the state who disagree with Biden’s response to the war in Gaza.

Biden has increased pressure on Israel in recent weeks amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions and encouraged a six-week cease-fire, but he has refused calls from the protesters to support a permanent cease-fire.

“This week’s brutal ‘Flour Massacre’ has proven once again that Israel is a brutal, inhumane apartheid state which carries a legacy of 75 years of genocide and occupation,” the DSA continued, referring to the killing of more than 100 civilians in Gaza this week. “Over 30,000 Palestinians have already died; how many will be ENOUGH for Joe Biden to stop this war?”

The group also shared resources for “uncommitted” efforts in Washington, Minnesota and Colorado, all of which go to polls in the coming weeks.

Vice President Harris said Sunday that Israel has “no excuses” to stop the “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza, some of the administration’s harshest rebukes of the Israeli government.

President Biden announced Friday that the U.S. will airdrop humanitarian aid into Gaza as negotiations continue over a temporary cease-fire in the conflict.
