Trump urges Mark Green to run for reelection as he weighs future

Former President Trump on Thursday pushed for Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.) to seek another term in Congress as the congressman mulls retirement.

“Mark Green has had lots of options because of his political talents, and the great job he has done as a Congressman, but given the fantastic work he’s doing as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I hope he runs for Re-Election to the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Green announced Feb. 14 that he planned to retire at the end of his term. The news came after he led the successful effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, in a second vote after the first fell short.

But Green confirmed earlier this week he was “seriously reconsidering” his decision to retire.

Green is among five GOP committee chairs who have announced their retirements at the end of this Congress — an unusually high number of senior lawmakers and rising stars willing to give up their gavels. Many in the House are blaming the toxicity on Capitol Hill, where internal party clashes have ground legislating to a snail’s pace.

Trump is on track to be the Republican nominee for president in November and has strong relationships with numerous GOP lawmakers from his first term in the White House.
