Trump wins Virgin Islands GOP caucus

Former President Trump won the Virgin Islands’s GOP caucus Thursday, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ using results provided by the territory’s Republican Party.

Though the Virgin Islands only awards four delegates, observers were watching the normally low-profile contest closely to see if rival presidential candidate Nikki Haley could pull off a victory there.

The former United Nations ambassador was hoping to generate a positive headline after her embarrassing defeat to “none of the above candidates” in Tuesday’s Nevada primary, which wouldn’t have awarded her any delegates anyway.

Trump is also competing in the Nevada Republican caucus Thursday, where he is expected to easily prevail and win all of the state GOP’s delegates.

The Thursday contests come as Trump and Haley have both trained their sights on the South Carolina primary Feb. 24, which is seen as possibly the last test for whether Haley can defy political gravity and keep the margin against her opponent within single digits.

An average of South Carolina surveys compiled by Decision Desk HQ and The Hill show Trump leading Haley by roughly 31 points.

Many Republicans have already started to acknowledge what appears to be the inevitability of a Trump GOP nomination as Republican holdouts and Trump skeptics came out and endorsed the former president in the wake of the New Hampshire primary results.
