Haley on Trump: ‘We’ve seen him get confused’

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley took a swipe at former President Trump’s cognitive ability ahead of the New Hampshire primary Tuesday.

Haley said in an interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash in Manchester, N.H., that she thinks Trump is fit to be president, but that the country needs a president who is ready to be “fully focused” on the job. She said neither Trump nor President Biden can say they can do that. 

“I mean, look, we’ve seen him get confused,” she said, referring to Trump. “He was confused about me having something to do with keeping security away from the Capitol. Clearly, he was talking about someone else.” 

The former United Nations ambassador was referencing comments Trump made Friday at a New Hampshire rally in which he seemed to mix up Haley with Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the former House Speaker. 

Haley also noted that Trump said in September that Biden, if reelected, would lead the country into World War II, instead of World War III. 

She has argued that both Biden, 81, and Trump, 77, are too old to serve and that the country needs a new generation of leaders. She told Bash that both of them would scientifically be experiencing some cognitive decline by their age. 

Haley said the issue with Trump is more about not having a clear vision about where he wants to take the country. 

“You’ve heard about who he’s going to go against in the past, what vendettas he’s going to take care of, but nothing about the vision for the future,” she said. 

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R), who has endorsed Haley and also sat down with Bash for the interview, said Trump is not the “same guy” he was when he first ran for president in 2016. 

“Folks want something different, which is why everybody is coming out,” he said. “They believe in a Republican Party of the future, not just litigating chaos of the past.”
