Over half say GOP doing too much to limit abortion: Poll
More than half of Americans in a new poll believe that the Republican Party is doing too much to limit abortion.
The new NewsNation Decision Desk HQ poll found that 53 percent of respondents said the GOP is doing too much to restrict abortion, while just 7 percent believe the party is doing too little. About 25 percent believe that the Republican Party is taking the right approach, and another 14 percent said they are unsure.
Nearly one-third of Republicans said that their party was also doing too much to restrict abortion, with about 30 percent saying so. Forty-five percent of Republicans said the party was taking the right approach to abortion, while nine percent said the party is doing too little.
Not surprisingly, 75 percent of Democrats were more likely to say that Republicans were doing too much to restrict abortion. Nine percent of Democrats said the GOP was doing the right thing on abortion and about 6 percent said the party was doing too little.
Women were more likely than men to say that Republicans took abortion restrictions too far. Fifty-six percent of women said the abortion restrictions were too much while 49 percent of men said the same thing.
Younger respondents were also slightly more likely to say the party is doing too much to restrict abortion, with about 55 percent of those 18 to 34 saying so. About 52 percent of those ages 35 to 55 and 53 percent of those older than 55 said the same.
The poll was conducted among 3,200 registered voters from Nov. 26 to Nov. 27, with a margin of error of two percentage points.
This comes as abortion is likely to be a key issue in the 2024 presidential race after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade last year. More states may put abortion referendums on their ballot, following in the steps of Ohio. Ohio voters passed a measure in November to enshrine abortion protections in the state’s Constitution.
