Houston to host 2028 Republican National Convention

The Republican National Committee (RNC) announced Friday that Houston will host the 2028 Republican National Convention.

“I am excited to announce Houston as the host city for the 2028 Republican National Convention. After a smart business decision made by the RNC last spring to allow us to select the next convention city earlier than ever, we are looking forward to seeing Houston in the spotlight come 2028,” RNC Charwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a release.

RNC committee members voted to select the biggest city in the Lone Star State as the seat of the convention five years out. The announcement for the 2028 host comes a year before the party hosts its 2024 event.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), in the RNC’s release, welcomed the convention to Houston, which he described as “one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, a thriving center of economic development, and a cultural leader of Texas.”

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) said Houston knows “how to host a major convention” and said the event “keeps us on the global stage.” 

The 2024 Republican National Convention is set to be held in Milwaukee next July, the same Wisconsin city that hosted the party’s first presidential primary debate earlier this week. The dates of the 2028 event have not yet been announced.

“Today’s announcement is a historic step for the Republican Party, and the beginning of a successful partnership between the city of Houston, the state of Texas, and the Republican National Committee. Republicans will stand united in Houston in 2028 as we execute a memorable convention in the Lone Star State,” Anne Hathaway, chair for the RNC’s site selection committee, said in the release.
