RNC chair: ‘Green wave’ of small-dollar donations helped Dems

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel on Tuesday said a “green wave” of small-dollar donations has helped Democratic candidates in the midterm elections surpass Republicans in fundraising.

“There is one wave that is in existence and that is the green wave,” McDaniel told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd while discussing a possible “blue wave” at the ballot box. “The Democrats have far outspent our candidates across the country with their small-dollar fundraising.”

{mosads}The two parties’ campaign committee have spent around similar amounts, McDaniel said.

“But the fundraising that the Democrats have had at the small-dollar level has been enormous,” McDaniel said. “And that is part of what is helping them be competitive tonight in a lot of these seats.”

“But we’re competitive, too,” she added.

More than 70 Democratic House hopefuls outraised Republican incumbents in the third quarter of 2018, according to an analysis by The Hill last month.

Small-dollar donors  — those who give $200 or less —  have become a powerful force in campaigns since President Trump came into office.

Liberal fury against Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress has caused a flood of low-dollar donations to Democratic candidates across the country.

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas), for example, has raised more than $38 million during the third quarter of the year in his bid to unseat incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R).
