Trump: GOP is 5-0 on special elections

President Trump in a Wednesday evening rally slammed the Democrats for their recent losses in congressional special elections and the media for being clueless about Republican victories. The administration is calling recent votes proof that Americans approve of Trump’s agenda. 

“The truth is, people love us … they haven’t figured it out yet,” Trump said, speaking to a rally in Iowa. He also boasted that the GOP is 5-0 for special election victories.

Trump appears to be counting both votes in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District’s special election, which resulted in a runoff Tuesday and a GOP victory. Democrats, however, saw an election victory with Rep.-elect Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) in California’s 32nd Congressional District. Gomez defeated a fellow Democrat in the runoff rather than a Republican.

Trump particularly touted the Republican wins in Georgia’s 6th and South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday night in Cedar Rapids.

“Karen is going to be really incredible,” Trump said, referring to Rep.-elect Karen Handel (R-Ga.).

The president then slammed Democrats for the money poured into the Georgia election, which became the most expensive House race in history.

“They spent close to 30 million dollars on this kid who forgot to live in the community that he was in,” Trump said of Democrat candidate Jon Ossoff, who currently lives outside of the 6th District while his fiancee finished medical school.

Handel defeated Ossoff in a closely watched special election that Democrats sought to make a referendum on Trump’s first few months in office. 

Prior to that, Republican Ralph Norman won in South Carolina, defeating Democrat Archie Parnell.

Trump during the Tuesday night rally said that had Handel lost in Georgia, then the media would have blamed him for the results. 

“And if Karen Handel had lost, they would have blamed it on me, which is fine,” he said.

Trump traveled to Iowa on Wednesday night for his first rally in the state since his January inauguration. The president previously took part in a tour following Election Day, where he hosted rallies across the country to thank his voters. Speaking to a friendly crowd at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Trump was briefly interrupted by protestors once but more often met cheers and chants of “USA” and “Build the wall.”
