President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday encouraged people to buy merchandise from L.L. Bean, after a company leader spoke out in support of Trump on TV.
“Thank you to Linda Bean of L.L.Bean for your great support and courage,” the president-elect tweeted. “People will support you even more now. Buy L.L.Bean.”
Linda Bean, the heiress to L.L. Bean and a longtime Republican activist, contributed $60,000 to a pro-Trump PAC, The Associated Press reported.
The group is facing scrutiny from the Federal Election Commission because individual contributions are limited to $5,000, the AP reported, citing a letter from federal regulators.
In response, the group is looking to change its registration to a super PAC that can raise unlimited funds. The letter said if the group didn’t respond, it could face consequences or an audit.
{mosads}Earlier this week, the company fired back after a boycott encouraged people not to shop at places that support the president-elect.
L.L. Bean released a statement saying the company as a whole does not endorse any political candidates and that people should not boycott the retailer just because one of the many family members involved in the business personally supported Trump.
“Simply put, we stay out of politics,” Shawn Gorman, L.L. Bean executive chairman, said in a Facebook post. “To be included in this boycott campaign is simply misguided, and we respectfully request that Grab Your Wallet reverse its position.”
