Biden to receive ‘regular updates’ about Michigan school shooting

President Biden was informed of the school shooting in Michigan while traveling in Minnesota on Tuesday, the White House said, and will receive “regular updates” about the incident as more information comes to light.

Biden briefly offered condolences to the families of the three people killed in the school shooting at the start of his remarks at a college in Minnesota.

“As we learn the full details, my heart goes out to the families enduring the unimaginable grief of losing a loved one,” Biden said. “You’ve got to know that that whole community has to be just in a state of shock right now.”

Earlier, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement that national security adviser Jake Sullivan informed Biden of the shooting before he toured Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount on Tuesday afternoon.

“The traveling team will remain in close touch with the team back at the White House and provide regular updates to the President as new information surfaces,” Psaki said.

Three people were killed and six injured in a shooting Tuesday afternoon at Oxford High School in Oxford, Mich., according to local authorities.

All of the victims are believed to be students, and one of those injured was a teacher, Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe said at a news conference. A 15-year-old sophomore has been taken into custody for the shooting, McCabe said, adding that he used a semi-automatic handgun.

“Deputies confronted him. He had the weapon on him. They took him into custody,” McCabe said at the news conference. “The whole thing lasted five minutes.”

Biden is visiting Minnesota on Tuesday to promote the infrastructure legislation he signed into law earlier this month. It’s unclear if he will address the shooting publicly in greater detail once more information comes to light.
