36 percent in new poll approve of Biden’s handling of spending negotiations

Just over one-third of Americans approve of President Biden’s handling of negotiations around the Democrats’ spending bill, according to a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.

The survey found that more Americans disapprove than approve of the job Biden is doing in spending negotiations. While 36 percent of Americans polled approve of his handling of negotiations around the “human infrastructure” bill, 41 percent of respondents give the president a thumbs-down, the news outlet noted.

The AP noted that 23 percent of those surveyed said they were indifferent.

Those figures are notably higher than the approval rating that Americans gave Republicans over their handling of the spending package — legislation that is anticipated to be opposed by most, if not all, GOP lawmakers.

The AP-NORC poll found that 49 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Republican lawmakers are doing in handling negotiations on the spending bill compared to 18 percent of Americans who approve.

Despite the low figures given to Biden, the poll found that 48 percent of Americans gave Biden a thumbs-up on the job he’s doing as president, though 51 percent still give the president a negative job rating.

The poll comes as Biden is set to announce a new framework on the spending bill that will supposedly have the support of all Democrats. The president is expected to meet with House Democrats to discuss aspects of his economic agenda and will later make remarks at the White House before leaving for Europe later that day.

Democrats are under pressure to get both the spending package and a roughly $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, which already passed in the Senate, passed by Oct. 31 as Biden and others make their way to a United Nations climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland.

The AP-NORC poll was conducted between Oct. 21-25 and polled 1,083 adults. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
