Biden nominates Mark Brzezinski to be U.S. ambassador to Poland

President Biden nominated Mark Brzezinski, the brother of MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski, to be the U.S. ambassador to Poland on Wednesday, according to a statement by the White House.

Mark Brzezinski was a former U.S. ambassador to Sweden between 2011 and 2015 under former President Obama. He also worked under former President Clinton’s National Security Council, first as the council’s director for Russia and Eurasia and later as a director for the Balkans. 

In the early 1990s, he was also a Fulbright scholar in Poland. 

He is the son of Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was born in Poland and later went on to be former President Carter’s national security adviser. According to CNN, Zbigniew Brzezinski was involved in the Camp David Accords and the Salt II treaty signing between Carter and former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev regarding the nuclear arms limits. 

Mika Brzezinski congratulated her brother in an Instagram post, saying, “It is great honor to our entire family and serves as a fitting tribute to our dad, who fled Poland in 1938, and became US national security advisor for President Jimmy Carter in 1976.”

The nomination was part of a larger announcement that included several other ambassadorial nominations: Elizabeth Anne Noseworthy Fitzsimmons was nominated as U.S. ambassador to Togo, Brian Wesley Shukan to Benin and David John Young to Malawi.

The nominations now await approval in the Senate.
