Jill Biden, Kate Middleton to meet this week

First lady Jill Biden and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge are set to hold a meeting this week focused on children and education.

The women will have their first-ever meeting on Friday. They will participate in a roundtable about early childhood education and tour a preschool in Hayle, Cornwall, the Office of the First Lady confirmed. 

The first lady is in Europe as President Biden embarks on his first foreign trip of his administration. The president’s trip will include three stops in Europe: the United Kingdom for a Group of Seven meeting; Belgium for a NATO summit; and Switzerland for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The first lady will return to Washington, D.C. after the U.K. portion of the trip.

Some of the first lady’s trip will be spent highlighting her Joining Forces military family initiative. The initiative was originally launched with then-first lady Michelle Obama during the Obama administration.

The East Wing in a statement to CNN said that the first lady has “an independent schedule of her own during the G7.”

“At Royal Air Force Base Mildenhall on Wednesday, she spoke about the importance of supporting military families. She also hosted a roundtable with United States military spouses who are focused on the wellbeing and emotional health of service members and their families,” Jill Biden’s press secretary Michael LaRosa told the outlet.

Joining Forces also partnered with Pixar and Disney+ to give families at the base an early screening of the animated film “Luca,” which is set to be released later this month.

The first lady on Friday is also scheduled to meet with members of the Bude Surf Veterans, a volunteer group based in Cornwall that supports military veterans through surfing. She will meet with veterans participating in the program and their families, in addition to meeting with other groups of veterans during the trip.

The first couple met with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie Johnson, on Thursday. They are scheduled to meet with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle on Sunday.
