President Biden and first lady Jill Biden’s trip to Rehoboth Beach, Del., this week is to celebrate the first lady’s 70th birthday.
She turns 70 on Thursday and the couple is leaving for their midweek getaway to the beach town on Wednesday. They are scheduled to leave the White House for Rehoboth at 5:15 p.m. and arrive an hour later.
The president will depart for the trip following his high-profile meeting with Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) to further negotiate the infrastructure package.
They are then set to remain in Rehoboth until Friday. The trip is the Bidens’ first trip to Rehoboth since the inauguration.
President Biden bought their beach house for $2.7 million in 2017, The Associated Press reported, after he left the vice presidency. It is in the North Shores neighborhood of Rehoboth.
The beach house was purchased after the president’s son, Beau, died of brain cancer in 2015 and has two signs on the house that read “Beau’s gift” and “Forever Jill.”
The president has been married to the first lady, a longtime community college professor, for 43 years. She was born in 1951 in New Jersey before moving to Pennsylvania.
Their 44th wedding anniversary is June 17.
