Half of Americans say their taxes are too high, but call them ‘fair’: poll

Half of Americans said that their taxes are too high even though a majority also describe them as fair, according to a new Gallup poll published Thursday.

The new poll found that 50 percent of respondents said their taxes are too high, 44 percent saw their taxes as about right and 4 percent said they are too low.

The 50 percent saying their taxes are too high is up a bit from Gallup’s polling over the last three years, in which 45 percent have described their taxes as too high.

In a separate question, 55 percent of adults polled said they think the taxes they pay are fair, while 43 percent said the taxes they pay are not fair. A higher percentage — between 57 percent and 65 percent — said they saw their taxes paid as fair during former President Trump’s administration, according to Gallup’s polling.

President Biden is proposing tax hikes on the nation’s wealthiest households to pay for a variety of social spending measures including eduction and child care. Biden’s proposal would raise the tax rate on couples making more than $509,000.

Biden also wants to raise corporate taxes and increase taxes on capital gains.

Gallup’s polling has shown that more Americans tend to think their taxes paid are fair when Republicans are in the White House than Democrats.

Democrats are also more likely to see their taxes paid as fair than Republicans, according to Gallup’s polling.

The most recent polling results were conducted from April 1-21 and reports a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
