Trump decries Cleveland baseball team’s reported name change: ‘Cancel culture at work’

President Trump decried Cleveland’s baseball team’s reported name change in a Sunday tweet, saying it was “Cancel culture at work.”

The president reacted to The New York Times report that Cleveland’s MLB team plans to stop using the name “Indians.”

“Oh no! What is going on?” he posted. “This is not good news, even for ‘Indians.’ Cancel culture at work!”

The Times reported earlier Sunday about the expected name change, which fans and Native American groups have long called for. 

Three people familiar with the decision told the newspaper that the team could announce that it intends to adjust its name, which it has had since 1915, as early as this week. 

Cleveland’s move comes months after the Washington Football Team removed its name that is considered a racial slur. 

Trump condemned the Cleveland baseball team and the Washington Football Team for considering changing their names in July, saying they were only doing so to be “politically correct.”

“They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct,” Trump tweeted in July.

Both name adjustments come after a year of racial justice protests sparked conversations about systemic racism in the U.S.
