Meadows: Election will be held on November third

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows during an interview on Sunday dismissed the idea of delaying Election Day due to concerns about the coronavirus outbreak, just days after President Trump suggested it in a tweet.

Speaking with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Meadows poured cold water on the idea.

“[The president] has not looked at delaying any- any election. What we will do is if we try to transform this and start mailing in ballots all across the country, all 50 states, what we will see is a delay because they’re just not equipped to handle it,” Meadows said.

“[W]e’re going to hold an election on November 3rd and the president is going to win,” he added.

Meadows’s comments follow Trump’s July 30 tweet suggesting that Election Day could be put off “until people can properly, securely and safely” vote.

The suggestion immediately drew criticism from Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill, as well as from allies of the president in the media. Steven Calibrisi, head of the right-leaning Federalist Society, wrote in The New York Times that Trump should be removed from office via impeachment unless he relents on any plans to delay the election.

“Never in the history of the Congress, through wars, depressions and the Civil War have we ever not had a federally scheduled election on time and we’ll find a way to do that again this November third,” added Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) during a radio interview.

“We’ll cope with whatever the situation is and have the election on November third as already scheduled,” he added.
