Trump to host king and queen of Spain for state visit
President Trump will host the king and queen of Spain for a state visit in April, the White House announced Tuesday.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will visit the White House on April 21. State visits are more formal than standard bilateral meetings between world leaders and include a ceremonial dinner with lawmakers and high-profile guests.
“The visit will celebrate our two countries’ close friendship and shared history, and reaffirm our commitments to stand together to address today’s global challenges,” the White House said in a statement.
The president and first lady Melania Trump previously hosted French President Emmanuel Macron and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and their spouses for state visits.
Trump has not previously traveled to Spain. He hosted former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at the White House in 2017. The country’s current government leader is Pedro Sánchez, a left-leaning politician.
