President Trump said Tuesday that he would meet with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the sidelines of the NATO leaders meeting in London and that he would “stay out” of the upcoming elections in the United Kingdom.

“I will be meeting with him, yes,” Trump told reporters during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the sidelines of the summit. The president also said that he had “no thoughts” about the upcoming U.K. elections.

“I’ll stay out of the election,” Trump told reporters, adding, “I think Boris is very capable and I think he’ll do a good job.”

Trump also said he “can work with anybody,” describing himself as “a very easy person to work with.”

The NATO meeting comes 10 days before the Dec. 12 general elections in the U.K.

Johnson is hoping the elections give his Conservative Party a boost as he seeks to conclude the country’s withdrawal from the European Union.

Trump was not expected to have a bilateral meeting with Johnson and one was not on his schedule for Tuesday.

Trump often speaks positively about his relationship with Johnson and has criticized Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, one of Johnson’s chief rivals. The president’s past remarks have raised questions about whether Trump would steer clear of British politics during his appearance in London so close to the election.
