Trump dropped plan to host G-7 at Doral after Republican criticism: report

President Trump reversed course on his plan to host next year’s Group of Seven (G-7) summit at his Doral resort after receiving pushback from a number of Republicans who criticized the move, The New York Times reports.

According to the Times, after widespread criticism from Democrats and some Republicans in the days following the White House’s announcement that the summit would be at Doral next year, Trump called into a meeting Saturday being held at Camp David by acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney with moderate Republicans.

{mosads}The meeting reportedly served as a space for the Republicans to discuss the House Democrats’ ongoing impeachment inquiry into Trump as well as other issues.

During the call, Trump was reportedly told that the majority of Republicans at the meeting said he should reverse his decision to host the G-7 summit at his luxury property in Miami.

“I didn’t see it being a big negative, but it certainly wasn’t a positive,” Rep. Pete King (N.Y.), who was one of the Republicans present at Camp David, told the Times. King added that the group of Republicans said the move “would be a distraction.”

Shortly after the call, on Saturday evening, Trump announced via Twitter that the summit would no longer be held at his property, two days after the White House announced it would.

In his series of tweets announcing his reversal, the president specifically took aim at what he called “the Hostile Media & their Democrat Partners” that “went CRAZY!”

“Thought I was doing something very good for our Country by using Trump National Doral, in Miami, for hosting the G-7 Leaders,” Trump sounded off in the series of tweets.

“I announced that I would be willing to do it at NO PROFIT or, if legally permissible, at ZERO COST to the USA. But, as usual, the Hostile Media & their Democrat Partners went CRAZY!” Trump continued.

“Therefore, based on both Media & Democrat Crazed and Irrational Hostility, we will no longer consider Trump National Doral, Miami, as the Host Site for the G-7 in 2020,” Trump tweeted. “We will begin the search for another site, including the possibility of Camp David, immediately. Thank you!”

Mulvaney, who had announced that Doral would host the event on Thursday, on Sunday said he thinks that the president canceled the plans because he knew it looked “lousy.”

He added that Trump had been “surprised” by the amount of pushback he received.
